"Fine" is one of my favourite songs by Do Nothing, partially because it has a really deep, overly serious voice saying "Real blood is blue // that red stuff is just from tv // it doesnt look like that in real life" which often makes me laugh
Well and he probably likes power. Not only he likes telling people what to do, he does enjoy superiority and power fantasy, thats part of what his sex is about, and probably what the homeless guy-murder is about
Also a problem arises in the fact that we dont know anything about Patrick Bateman, other than he enjoys sex and murder. Of course the sex isnt just about sex but we can assume he does enjoy it. I believe he probably does still like music somewhat genuinely (though his interest is artificial) but aside from that we have nothing to anchor ourselves for a reimagining
A non-binary reading is possible but my first instinct for a trans reading would be to imagine Patrick Bateman as hating masculinity so much he switches over into femininity and seeks to have as little to do with as possible. Of course, potentially he could find another masculinity he can seek comfort in, in which case a transgender reading isnt necessary (but fun)
Of course theres something transgender about his self-hatred, the performance of masculinity and the hatred of said performance, but I'm not under the illusion that a transfemme reading actually fits that well, since his hatred of his performance of masculinity and the masculine world around him isnt accompanied with an interest in femininity or anything or any other type of living. He simply isnt aware of another type of living. His only interest in women is either 1. Sex and murder, or 2. Finding out if they actually are as stupid as everyone around him believes and as he needs to believe for his mask. Of course he cant find that out as he only really measures his own metrics for intelligence or interiority, but he does respect somewhat the only woman who seems to have an ounce of an idea of what he is (a dangerous man who knows hes dangerous).
Cant stop thinking. Patrick really hates the way he lives. He wishes he could be as dumb as everyone around him about it, not think deeper than "hell yeah cocaine and money", to live in the moment and be genuine. His entire life is a mask, he even has artificual music opinions, and he wish he could just not be deeper than the mask. But also really wishes to not have the mask. The entire film he wants to be found out sooo bad, be unmasked and asked to ponder what he is. He needs to know that life is more than this. He desperately wants to be himself, for people to know who he is, but the only thing he knows he is that is not artificial is that he is a murderer, he constantly flirts with confessing. Out of self-preservation, he doesnt actually, but he constantly edges it, because he really wants people to find out. Until he panics and actually confesses, of course. His final breakdown is realising that he will have to keep living this facade because even if he truly lays it all bare, the world simply just doesnt look, doesnt care.
Also HRT could have fixed her so heres fem!patrick bateman. She could have been such a weird sex freak if she realised theres more to life than faking masculinity (also she still like music but its way more obscure now)
also love that Luis is basically just an example of "autistic people when they meet someone 5% more autistic than them" Baleman fucking hates him because he is as obsessed about the same things as he is but he doesnt do it with the right tone he is too happy (and gay) about it
We learned a little bit of sign language for bits but now that my voice died its actually coming in handy which is great but also such an insult to pure commitment to bits
